Defying conventional wisdom that local comedies don't travel, Dany Boon's French mega blockbuster Welcome To The Sticks (Bienvenue Chez Les Ch'tis) is doing a roaring trade in both Germany and Italy.

The comedy - released last weekend in Germany by Prokino under the title Wilkommen Bei Den Scht'is - has grossed $1,225,334 from 160 prints and 143,664 admissions. The film was perched at number two in the German box-office charts with the weekend's strongest screen average of $7,660 per print. A further expansion in screens is planned this week.

In Italy, the film has also done very brisk business. Medusa released it last weekend as Giu' Al Nord. The film earned $1.3 million from 319 prints for a $4,065 screen average, placing it third in the weekend charts.

In France, Welcome to the Sticks is the biggest French hit in history with more than 20.4 million admissions and $200m at the box-office. It has also sold close to two million DVDs.
