The 2011 Cannes Film Festival sees the launch of Location Flanders’ €25,000 (appr. US$36,725) location grant. Once every year, the grant will go to a foreign film or television series that extensively puts Flanders in the spotlight as a film location.

The new location grant covers the fees and costs of a professional location scout, location fees, the use of local film professionals and the rent of audiovisual materials and facilities. On top of that, the local Film Offices of Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent, Leuven, Mechelen and Ostend will fully assist the production by offering their services for free.

Producers who submit a complete application file and pass a cultural test are eligible for the location grant. A jury decides which project is to receive the grant.

Feature films or television series that favour Flemish locations and possibly a local subject matter have a better chance of qualifying for the grant than other projects. In terms of historic Flanders-set themes, the Centenary of the First World War* (1914-1918) is one obvious subject that filmmakers might turn to.

Besides historic subjects, applicants can also find inspiration in literature or apply with an original story using contemporary Flanders as a background.

The application deadline for the first location grant is 30 September 2011. The winning project will be announced in November.
