Tsui Hark’s Detective Dee And The Mystery of The Phantom Flame scooped six prizes at this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards, while kung-fu tribute Gallants picked up best film and three other awards.
Tsui won best director for Dee, which was also awarded best actress for Carina Lau, best art direction, best costume and make-up design, best sound design and best visual effects.
Gallants also won best supporting actor and actress for Teddy Robin and Susan Shaw and best original score, which also went to rock musician turned filmmaker Robin.
Nicholas Tse was awarded best actor for his role as a police informant in Dante Lam’s crime thriller The Stool Pigeon, while best new performer went to Hanjin Tan for Bruce Lee, My Brother.
Best screenplay went to Pang Ho-cheung’s critically acclaimed romantic comedy Love In A Puff, scripted by Pang and Heiward Mak, while honours for best action choreography went to Sammo Hung for Ip Man 2.
The award for best Asian film went to Japan’s Confessions, which beat China’s Aftershock and Under The Hawthorn Tree, directed by Zhang Yimou, and two films from Taiwan – Monga and Seven Days In Heaven.
