Germany's Splendid has become the first distributor to pounce on Ong Bak 2, starring and directed by Tony Jaa, since The Weinstein Company surrendered international rights to the project.
TWC acquired all rights excluding Asia and the UK to the film last year, from Thailand's Sahamongkolfilm International, but recently renegotiated the deal and handed back all territories except North America.
Currently in production, the film is a period piece about a young man who embarks on a journey that teaches him the inner meaning of martial arts. Action choreography is by Panna Rittikrai.
Sahamongkolfilm executive vice president Gilbert Lim negotiated the deal with Splendid which acquired the film for a low seven figure. Sahamongkol recently concluded its first deal with Splendid which bought action title Tabunfire at the recent European Film Market in Berlin.
