Hong Kong’s total box office grew by 13% to $172m (HK$1.34bn) in 2010, thanks to a strong line-up of 3D and other releases, according to local industry body the Motion Picture Industry Association (MPIA).

Hong Kong films took a combined $38.9m (HK$302.6m) for a 22.6% market share, which was a slight increase on the 21% they took in 2009. A total of 286 films were released, including 54 local productions and 232 foreign movies.

Toy Story 3 was the highest-grossing film of the year, with a haul of $11.5m. While 3D was a factor in the strong results for foreign films, 2D releases including Inception and Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows also performed well, grossing $7.5m and $5m respectively. However, six of the top ten foreign releases were 3D films.

The top-grossing Hong Kong film was Ip Man 2, starring Donnie Yen, which grosed $5.6m and was one of only two local films in the top ten. The other was Shaw Brothers remake 72 Tenants of Prosperity released over the lucrative Chinese New Year holiday period.

“3D is bringing audiences back to the cinema, but it’s not the only reason for box office growth,” said MPIA chief executive Brian Chung. “The overall quality of films was high last year – and we can see from the results for Inception and Ip Man 2 that there is still demand for quality, story-driven films that are not in the 3D format.”
