Beijing-based Huayi Brothers is expanding its relationship with IMAX by presenting seven additional films in the immersive format.
Four of the films will be released this year including Tai Chi 0, which recently screened at Venice and is scheduled for Chinese release on September 27, and Tai Chi Hero on October 25. Also set for release in the IMAX format are Feng Xiaogang’s Back to 1942, which will be released on an unspecified date later this year, and Chinese Zodiac on December 20.
The companies also said that Huayi would present an additional three films in the IMAX format. Huayi previously released Feng’s Aftershock in the IMAX format in July 2010, a move which contributed to the film’s $102m box office haul.
“We are delighted to expand our partnership with Huayi Bros as they share our commitment to showcasing the incredible talent and passion of Chinese cinema,” said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond.
“We believe this strategy will also create opportunities for IMAX to export these films to other large markets, such as Southeast Asia and North America.”
Tai Chi Hero and Chinese Zodiac will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of IMAX 3D.
