Opening day-and-date with North America, Robert Rodriguez's return to his Latin roots with Once Upon A Time In Mexico blasted its way to the top of the Icelandic box-office with an impressive 4,020 admissions.
The first international territory to receive the film, the final part the director's El Mariachi trilogy, Iceland gave it a strong 1,340 admission screen average from its three prints. This was twice the number of second-placed rival opener, The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which averaged 669 admissions from five prints for a 3,344 admissions total for the weekend.
The start bodes well for Mexico's international prospects. The action film opens in its first major international territory this week in Germany (Sep 18).
Though unable to reach the top when released last week, Eddie Murphy comedy Daddy Day Care nevertheless moved past the last two week's chart topper, American Pie: The Wedding, holding third position after a small 8% fall off.
Alan Parker's The Life Of David Gale opened in 7th with 1,055 admissions from its three prints.
