Icon Film Distribution has acquired all Australian rights to concert film Mayday 3DNA from Taiwan-based Double Edge Entertainment.
The film has also gone to Deltamac for Hong Kong and Beijing Galloping Horse for mainland China. Shot entirely in 3D, the film features footage from a recent concert tour of Taiwanese rock band MayDay which is interweaved with three narrative stories that intersect at the end of the film.
The band has a large following in Australia and New Zealand which together have more than 850,000 Chinese residents.
“This will be an event film to highlight the new wave of Chinese programming Icon is invested in for Australia and New Zealand,” said Icon Australia CEO Greg Hughes.
Mayday 3DNA is directed by Kung Wen-yen, Chang Rong-ji and Sean Kao and executive produced by Michael Tseng, Wolf Chen and Julia Hsieh.
Double Edge has also added two music-themed Taiwanese films – Spin Kid and Gangster Rock – to its Cannes slate.
Spin Kid, set in the world of the techno club scene, is directed by newcomer Joe C Lee and stars Blue Lan who appeared in the biggest local hit of Taiwan so far this year, Night Market Hero. The story revolves around the relationship between a cop and his son who becomes a popular DJ.
Action comedy Gangster Rock, starring Van Fan (Cape No. 7), is about a former gangster turned rock band manager who creates the hottest rock band in Taipei.
