UTV Motion Pictures has announced that it has entered the list of top 20 film distributors in North America in the first half of 2008, by becoming the first Indian film studio to cross the $5m revenue mark.

The ranking is based on US box office figures for the first six months of the year compiled by AC Nielsen.

According tothe Mumbai-based studio, UTV releases including Race, Jodha Akbar and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, grossed $5.48m in the first 28 weeks of the year, making UTV the leading Indian motion picture distributor in the US and the only foreign-language movie distributor in the Top 20. Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par was released in December 2007 but continued its run into 2008.

UTV established its US operations in 2004. 'The US market is one of our top three priority markets worldwide and our sustained and relentless drive to produce and release quality content and then market and distribute it effectively, has helped us emerge as one of the top distributors in the most competitive market in the world,' said Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO, UTV Motion Pictures.

The second half of the year has seen another box office success for UTV with the release of Kismat Konnection (July 18) which raked in over $280,000 in its opening weekend.

The studio's forthcoming releases include Madhur Bhadarkar's Fashion, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Delhi 6 and a co-production with Sohail Khan Productions Main Aur Mrs Khanna. The company's first solo Hollywood production The Exterminators, starring Heather Graham, is in production in the US.
