Golden Globe winner and star of TV's Mad Men Jon Hamm has signed on to Werc Werk Works' Allen Ginsberg project Howl currently shooting in New York City.
Hamm will star as the Beat Gernation poet's celebrated defence
attorney Jake Ehrlich in the story about the obscenity trial that
surrounded Ginsberg's eponymous poem.
James Franco plays Ginsberg and the key cast includes Mary-Louise
Parker, David Strathairn, Jeff Daniels, Bob Balaban, Treat Williams
and Alessandro Nivola. The film will incorporate a reimagining of
Ginsberg reciting the poem through animated sequences designed by
illustrator Eric Drooker under the supervision of animation director
John Hays.
Telling Pictures' Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman wrote the
screenplay and will co-direct. Werc Werk Works is producing and fully
financing and president Christine Walker serves as producer while CEO
Elizabeth Redleaf and Gus Van Sant are executive producing.
This is the third production for Werc Werk Works, which launched in
August 2008 and is producing and financing Todd Solondz's upcoming
feature Life During Wartime, which is in post-production, and Bella
Tarr's The Turin Horse in production.
