Internet television service Joost has added Canadian short film channel Movieola to its content mix.
A unit of Toronto-based Channel Zero, a specialty digital broadcaster, Movieola currently has over 1m subscribers in Canada. The Joost platform uses secure P2P streaming technology to deliver more than 150 channels via broadband. Joost has content deals with companies including Aardman Animation, MTV, National Geographic, ShortsTV and Warner Bros Television. Canadian video clip service MuchMusic is also providing content.
David Miller, director of creative and business development for Channel Zero, told Screen International that Joost's format was a perfect fit for the channel. 'This is an ideal thing for us because short film content is well-suited to the viewing habits of people online. There's a large variety and a minimal time commitment. Our tag line is short is good.'
Miller said the Movieola content on Joost will be customised. 'We'll have toensure that we have all worldwide internet rights.' In a statement, Yvette Alberdingk Thijm, executive vice president of content strategy and acquisition for Joost, said, 'Joost is an entertainment destination with high-quality, professionally-produced programming that appeals to everyone. Adding Movieola to the Joost platform ensures our audiences have access to some of the best short film content from around the world.'
