Director Grant Gee, who previously made 1998 Radiohead documentary Meeting People Is Easy, says he isn't ruling out future music related ideas, and would love to make a film with Neil Young.
Next up, however, is Gee's The Western Lands, a film about landscapes to be narrated by writer and rock climber Jim Perrin. Gee already got a 10-minute trailer prepared and the project has development funding from the Arts Council England.
Gee, who is also well known for his music videos, says he would like to move into fictional features as well.
One of the film's three producers, Tom Atencio of New York and London-based Hudson Productions, is working with Johnny Nemo comic book co-creator Peter Milligan for an initial treatment and first draft of a big-screen adaptation. Johnny Nemo is about a violent, foul-mouthed private eye working in London 2921.
Atencio is new to film production, after working in the music business for 25 years with artists including New Order, No Doubt and Jane's Addiction.
Atencio and his London-based producing partner Tom Astor are looking to develop other features, both at the studio level and smaller independent projects. Astor is also working with Gorillaz and Tank Girl creator Jamie Hewlett on a BBC television project.
Hudson also plans to work with its Joy Division partner, Jacqui Edenbrow of London-based Brown Owl, on future projects.
Joy Division is being sold by Mark Ankner at Endeavor Independent for North America, and Katapult is selling internationally.
'When you finance a film yourself, you don't know what to expect. We've been lucky enough to emerge out of the 300 films here,' Atencio says of the buzz around Joy Division. 'We're speaking to all kinds of distributors and we're going to see who is going to do the best job with our baby. It isn't always about money.'
Atencio noted, unsurprisingly, that many of the same distributors who picked up Anton Corbijn's feature Control, about Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis, were keen to acquire the documentary as well.
Joy Division has its final public screening on Saturday, September 15.
