Drama directed by Paolo Sorrentino.
The first official image from Sky, HBO and Canal+ co-production The Young Pope has been revealed, featuring Jude Law as Lenny Belardo, Pope Pius XIII.
The image, taken from the production, shows Pope Pius XIII lying on a reclining chair under the Rome sun.
Production of the series - set for broadcast on Sky Atlantic in Italy, Germany, Austria, the UK and Ireland - began recently and all eight episodes will be directed by Paolo Sorrentino, director of the Oscar-winner The Great Beauty as well as Youth.
Alongside Law in the title role, the series stars Oscar-winner Diane Keaton in her first-ever series regular TV role alongside Silvio Orlando, Scott Shepherd, Cécile de France, Javier Cámara, Ludivine Sagnier, Toni Bertorelli and James Cromwell.
The series tells the story of the beginning of Pontificate of Pius XIII, born Lenny Belardo. A complex and conflicted character with great power, Belardo will face losing those closest to him and the fear of being abandoned, even by his God. However, he is not afraid of undertaking the millennial mission of defending that same God and the world representing him.
Keaton will play Sister Mary, a nun from the US living in Vatican City.
“The Young Pope” hails from Wildside with exec producers Lorenzo Mieli, Mario Gianani and John Lyons, and Haut et Court TV with Caroline Benjo, Carole Scotta and Simon Arnal exec producing. The project is a co-production for HBO and Sky.
