The Czech Film and Television Academy selected Kawasaki’s Rose as this year’s Czech Oscar Entry.

Jan Hrebejk directs and Petr Jarchovsky wrote the screenplay.

The film marks the fourth from Hrebejk and fourth from Jarchovsky that will represent the Czech Republic in the Oscar race.

Rudolf Biermann (Infilm) and Tomas Hoffman (Infinity) produced. The film premiered at the Berlinale in the Panorama section.

The other top contenders for the Czech Oscar submission had been Tomas Masin’s 3 Seasons In Hell and Jan Sverak’s Kooky.

Menemsha Films has US rights to Kawasaki’s Rose and will open the film at New York’s Film Forum on Nov 24.

The film is described as “A drama about family and politics, the role of memory in relationships, and that of jealousy, arrogance, love, loyalty and betrayal.”
