Iceland has selected Baltasar Kormakur’s real-life adventure drama The Deep to represent the country in the Oscar race.
The Deep had its world premiere in Toronto. The film is based on the true story of an Icelandic man who miraculously survived when a fishing boat sank off the south coast of Iceland in 1984.
The Icelandic Film and TV Academy voted on the entry. Iceland’s last Oscar nominee was Fridrik Thor Fridriksson for Children Of Nature in 1992.
Meanwhile, Estonia has picked Toomas Hussar’s Mushrooming. The debut feature premiered at Karlovy Vary before also showing in Toronto. The story follows a politician who tries to take a break from work by mushroom picking, only to get lost in the wilderness while a media scandal is brewing.
In Slovakia, the Slovak Film and Television Academy has put forward Made In Ash by Iveta Grófová.
