Ten competition films will vie for the Grand Prize of Y1m ($9,830), including Waltz With Bashir and Ryusuke Hamaguchi's Passion (see list below).
The competition jury will be headed by Teruyo Nogami, author and former crew member on most of Akira Kurosawa's films. She is joined by Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Ka-fai, Korean director Song Il-gon, Le Monde journalist Isabelle Regnier and São Paulo film festival president Leon Cakoff.
The 12-film Special Screenings programme comprises the opening and closing films and includes the world premiere of Sion Sono's Love Exposure; 17-director omnibus Welcome To São Paulo and Venice competition title Vegas: Based On A True Story, among other titles.
The Special Programme features a 12-film English-subtitled retrospective of classic Japanese director Koreyoshi Kurahara and a five-film retrospective of Brazilian filmmaker Joaquim Pedro de Andrade.
