Fresh from its victory for Best Canadian Feature at TIFF, Guy Maddin's idiosyncratic documentary My Winnipeg has been sold to IFC Entertainment in US, Soda Pictures in the UK and Maximum Films Distribution in Canada.

The deals were announced by My Winnipeg producer (and DoP) Jody Shapiro from the podium at the TIFF awards brunch on Saturday.

The Maximum deal was something of a no-brainer give that the film is being sold by Charlotte Mickie of sister company Maximum Films International. The IFC and Soda deals are all-rights; Maximum will have theatrical and home entertainment.

Written and directed by Maddin, the film is a Documentary Channel original production commissioned by executive producer Michael Burns and produced by Shapiro and Phyllis Laing of Manitoba-based Buffalo Gal Pictures. It screened as a Special Presentation at this year's festival, a presentation made more special because Maddin provided live on-stage narration for the film.

In the Q&A session following that performance Maddin was asked if would ever perform the piece again. He responded, 'After I read every line, I said to myself, 'I'll never have to say that again.'' He has since reversed that statement. Shortly after the screening he was invited, and accepted the offer, to reprise his performance at the 2008 Berlinale.
