The Match Factory has added Kyrgyz filmmaker Aktan Arym Kubat’s next feature The Light to its sales line-up.
The French-German-Kyrgyz-Dutch-Russian co-production between A.S.A.P. Films, Pallas Film, Oy Art, Volya Films and Viss has already been presented at Rotterdam’s CineMart and Belgrade’s B2B Industry Meetings. It will begin 10 weeks of principal photography on May 26 in the region of Issyk-Kul Lake in Kyrgyzstan.
The Light focus on an electrician who has a far greater effect on the people around him than his job defines.
Aktan Arym Kubat (who is also known as Aktan Abdykalykov) has been working as a film director since 1992, winning the Golden Leopard of the Future at Locarno in 1993 for The Swing and the Silver Leopard for The Adopted Son (Beshkempir) in 1998. His film The Chimp premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes in 2001.
The third collaboration between A.S.A.P.Films and Aktan, The Light is also the third of the French company’s projects to be handled by The Match Factory this year. A.S.A.P. is also a co-producer on Benedek Fliegauf’s latest feature Womb and is in pre-production on Danis Tanovic’s Cirkus Columbia, both of which are being handled by the Cologne-based sales company.
