Max Von Sydow, Pete Postlethwaite, Rachel Hurd-Wood, Alice Krige and Mackenzie Crook have joined the cast of Solomon Kane, which as previously reported will star James Purefoy.

Michael J Bassett will direct the Davis Film project from his own script. Samuel Hadida for Davis Films will produce with Paul Berrow's Epic Films co-producing.

Los Angeles-based Essential Entertainment is handling international sales.

Solomon Kane will start shooting in Prague later this month.

The epic adventure is the first in a planned trilogy based on pulp stories by Robert E Howard, who also created Conan The Barbarian.

Purefoy plays Kane, a 16th Century soldier who tries to redeem his past violence with a life of peace but has to fight a dark power.

Hadida said: 'Over the years since Howard first wrote the Solomon Kane stories, the iconic characters have grown into pop culture icons - villains, heroes, innocents. I am thrilled to have these amazing and distinctive actors bring life to this powerful story.'

Hadida's Davis Film is also shooting Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus.
