Singapore’s Media Development Authority (MDA) has appointed Singapore Airshow & Events as the official organiser for its recently-announced international cinema event ScreenSingapore.
The event will encompass a film and entertainment technology market with a focus on 3D; screenings of up upcoming Hollywood and Asian films, along with conferences, workshops and financing and producer forums.
The first edition will take place in June 2011, following the Cannes Film Festival and ahead of the summer box office season, although exact dates have yet to be announced. In addition to the MDA, the event is backed by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and Economic Development Board (EDB).
“Asia is going to be the primary source of growth in the film and entertainment business in the years to come as the focus of the industry shifts from the mature American market to areas outside of the US,” said ScreenSingapore chairman Greg Coote.
“Major studios have been looking to Asia for opportunities to expand in this young and exciting market. As a gateway providing an ideal springboard to the region, Singapore’s strong infrastructure and lead, in fast establishing itself as a hub for digital distribution, make it well-placed to hold this significant event.”
Singapore Airshow & Events organises conferences and events including the Singapore Airshow, maritime defence event IMDEX Asia and Singapore International Water Week. It also manages the Changi Exhibition Centre (CEC), located on a 30-hectare seafront site in Singapore.
