The Universal bandwagon rolled on as Minions - its Despicable Me spin-off with Illumination Entertainment - delivered the second biggest animated launch ever at the North American box office.
Only Shrek The Third has opened higher over three days on $122.5m in May 2007.
Universal stablemate Jurassic World finished second on $18.1m and has generated $590.6m after five sessions, while Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out in third has amassed $283.6m after four.
Warner Bros’ horror film The Gallows arrived in fifth place on $10m in 2,720 theatres, while focus opened the Ryan Reynolds thriller Self/Lessat number eight on $5.4m from 2,353.
Bollywood title Baahubali: The Beginning debuted via Blue Sky Cinema at number nine on $3.6m from 236 for a powerful $15,148 per-site average.
Overall box office for the top 12 climbed 57.6% against last weekend and 31.3% compared to the same session in 2014.
This week’s wide releases are Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man starring Paul Rudd via Buena Vista and the Amy Schumer comedy Trainwreck directed by Judd Apatow for Universal.
