Miramax CEO Michael Lang made the announcement at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival.
Following the launch of its eXperience Facebook app in the US, UK and Turkey earlier this year, Miramax is now moving into the Middle East with a tailor-made Facebook App for the Qatar, UAE and Egyptian markets.
Miramax CEO Michael Lang [pictured] made the announcement at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival, in the festival’s designated “Social Media Lounge”.
The first five Miramax titles to be made available via the App will be Spy Kids 1, 2 and 3, Shall We Dance and Good Will Hunting, with plans to expand the number of films down the line. The price for renting the films will be $3 or 30 Facebook credits.
Users will also be able to access Miramax clips.
Lang said he was hoping to reach out to the 15m Facebook users in the three markets and described the app as a reflection of Miramax’s “commitment to the region”.
“We are big believers in the potential of these markets – not only for digital distribution, but as a place for emerging filmmakers. It’s tough not to get incredibly optimistic about the future of this part of the world. We believe the market opportunity will only grow,” added Lang.
He confirmed that there were plans to roll out the App in other territories including Japan.
Miramax secured deals with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and iTunes as part of an ongoing digital drive.
