The multi year agreement is for video on demand rights to current and library titles.

China’s Youku has reached an online distribution deal with another Hollywood studio.  The Internet television company announced it has entered into a multiple-year agreement with NBCUniversal International Television Distribution for video-on-demand rights in China. 

The deal covers a broad collection of current, library and upcoming NBCUniversal feature films, including Schindler’s List, The Mummy series films, Jurassic Park series films, Apollo 13, Trainspotting and The Big Lebowski.  The films will be available for on-demand viewing through Youku’s pay service “Youku Premium”.

In addition to a yearly rotating selection of more than 100 classic titles from NBCUniversal’s catalogue, upcoming NBCUniversal releases including Contraband, Safe House, The Lorax, and Snow White & The Huntsman will be available for the pay service. The new films will appear on Youku after their China theatrical releases.  

“Youku has been steadily broadening and deepening our partnerships with Chinese and international studios,” said Huilong Zhu, Youku’s vice president of movie operations and corporate development. “Our new agreement with NBCUniversal is one more step forward towards our goal of offering the highest quality content to Youku’s more than 300 million viewers.”

Since 2010, Youku began to actively license content from major Chinese production companies and Hollywood studios.  It has previously signed deals with Disney, Paramount, Dreamworks, Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox.

Earlier in March Youku announced it was to acquire 100% share of leading online video company Tudou.com and became the largest Internet television company in China, taking up around 80% of China’s Internet video market, according to Chinese Internet market analysts.
