Warsaw-based New Europe Film Sales has taken on worldwide rights to Matt Porterfield’s I Used To Be Darker, which premiered in Sundance’s NEXT programme and will screen in the Berlinale’s Forum section.
The film is about a teenage girl in Ocean City, Maryland, who finds herself in trouble and seeks help from her aunt and uncle, who are splitting up.
The cast features Ned Oldham, Kim Taylor, Deragh Campbell and Hannah Gross.
Porterfileld’s last feature Putty Hill also screened in Berlin’s Forum.
A work-in-progress cut of I Used to be Darker screened at the 2012 US in Progress Wrocław, where it received the Europa Distribution and CICAE award. The film was already picked up by the Sundance Channel Global for numerous territories in Eastern Europe and Asia.
The film marks the third feature on New Europe’s slate, after Now, Forager: A Film About Love And Fungi and It Looks Pretty From A Distance. The company’s catalogue also includes more than 40 shorts.
New Europe Film Sales has added producer and script editor Katarzyna Siniarska to its team. The outfit also announced its first international co-production, a short film by Dominga Sotomayor and Katarzyna Klimkiewicz called The Time Before.
