New Films International president Nesim Hason is expanding the 30-year company into the US theatrical market and has named its first two titles.
Hason has hired Tim Swain to head US theatrical marketing and he will work with chief content officer Ron Gell, who is acquiring titles for US and international distribution, as well as with production chief Straw Weisman.
The maiden roster comprises Michael Aimette’s Turning Green starring Timothy Hutton and Alessandro Nivola, and Alejandro Chomski’s A Beautiful Life produced by Hason.
“My company is extremely well established internationally and has been successfully distributing films theatrically in over 25 countries around the world,” Hason said. “We understand that the US market is
very challenging and feel we’re well positioned to expand our company at this time.”
Gell added that due to the contraction in the US independent sector the company would offer a timely platform for independent film-makers.
Swain has worked in theatrical distribution for many years and his credits include Eve’s Bayou with Winona Ryder and Eve’s Bayou starring Samuel Jackson.
Hason said New Films was in discussions with potential US studio partners as well as with Warner Bros in Japan and Universal in the UK.
