Fired up by the exploits of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, North American box office for the year to date has reached $2.39bn and narrowed the gap between 2019 to 16.1% at the same stage.
Universal/Illumination’s animated children’s smash stands at $371.2m through April 21 heading into its third weekend, close behind 2019’s Captain Marvel on $388.1m for the same period. Disney/Marvel will release sequel The Marvels starring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris on November 10.
So far 26 films have opened wide in 2023 and box office is tracking 36% ahead of 2022 through April 21, when 20 films had opened wide, box office stood at $1.76bn, and the leader was The Batman on $362.5m.
For the record this year is tracking 539.8% ahead of 2021, when five films had opened wide to generate $374.5m and Godzilla Vs. Kong was the top film on $80.3m.
2023 tracks 31.9% ahead of 2020, when 22 titles had opened in wide release, box office stood at $1.82bn, and the leader was Bad Boys For Life on $204.5m.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie will soar past $400m this weekend and is expected to hold on to number one until Disney/Marvel’s The Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3 kicks off summer season over Memorial Day Weekend on May 5.
