A24 has closed a raft of territory sales on former Golden Lion winner Darren Aronofsky’s buzzy upcoming Venice world premiere The Whale, Screen has learned.
Rights to the drama starring Brendan Fraser as an obese, reclusive teacher who yearns to reconnect with his estranged daughter have gone to Madman for Australia and New Zealand, Originals Factory for France, and Green Narae for South Korea.
Deals have also closed in Scandinavia (Nordisk), Latin America (California), Japan (Kino), Benelux (Cineart), Canada (Elevation), Taiwan (Movie Cloud), Portugal (Nos Lusomundo), former Yugoslavia (Bltiz), and Poland (Monolith).
The Whale will open in Hong Kong through Golden Scene as well as in Singapore (Mm2), Greece (Tanweer), Israel (Lev), Romania (Vertical), Switzerland (Pathe), Turkey (Fabula), India (Impact), Baltics (Film Distribution), South Africa (Empire), and Hungary (ADS).
It was previously announced that Koch will handle Germany and Austria, I Wonder will release in Italy, and YouPlanet will release in Spain.
Aronofsky directed The Whale from Samuel D. Hunter’s screenplay adapted from his stage play of the same name. Starring alongside Fraser are Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, and Samantha Morton.
This is Aronofsky’s first film since Mother! in 2017. He won the Golden Lion in 2008 with The Wrestler. Venice Film Festival runs August 31-September 10.
