UPDATE: A24’s SXSW opener Everything Everywhere All At Once added an estimated $5.4m as it ranked sixth in its fifth session and continued its sterling run to reach $26.9m.
ORIGINAL REPORT: In a major achievement for a platform release following two years of the pandemic that will provide plenty of cheer at CinemaCon next week, A24’s SXSW opener Everything Everywhere All At Once has crossed $20m at the North American box office.
The film debuted on March 25 when it earned just over $500,000 from 10 theatres and built from there after the $50,000 per-theatre average delivered the best of the year to date and the second best of the pandemic behind Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza on $86,200 via MGM’s UA Releasing last year.
Everything Everywhere All At Once expanded into 38 sites in its second session and pushed the gross to $1.8m, before increasing the count to 1,250 in the third weekend to reach $8.4m.
A further expansion into 2,200 venues in the fourth weekend set the film up for a $17.7m running total and it crossed $20m on April 20. At time of writing the gross stood at $21.5m. According to reports A24 focused its marketing efforts on digital and social platforms.
Michelle Yeoh stars as a woman who gets caught up in a time-travelling adventure to save the world as she discovers how her alternative lives could have played out.
Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu and James Hong also star in the film, directed by the Daniels, whose Swiss Army Man premiered at Sundance in 2016.
