Charlotte Wells’ feature directorial debut Aftersun is in contention for best feature at the 2022 Gotham Awards alongside Juan Pablo Gonzalez’s Mexican drama Dos Estaciones, Ricky D’Ambrose’s The Cathedral, Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Todd Field’s TÁR.
In a highly satisfying day (October 25) for Wells, the Scottish filmmaker’s drama earned four nods including one for Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award. Paul Mescal is up for best lead performance in the gender-neutral acting categories and Frankie Corio is among the breakthrough performer nominees for her role in the father-daughter drama that premiered at Cannes Critics’ Week and has been sold widely by Charades.
Lead performance contenders include Oscar heavyweights Cate Blanchett for TÁR (which leads the field on five nominations), Brendan Fraser for The Whale, Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Thandiwe Newton for God’s Country.
Jessie Buckley and Ben Whishaw from Women Talking are up for supporting performance, as are Nina Hoss and Noémie Merlant for Tár, and Mark Rylance for Bones And All.
Wells finds herself in a strong field of emerging talent up for the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award that includes Jane Schoenbrun for We’re All Going To The World’s Fair, Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic for Murina, and Elegance Bratton for The Inspection.
The Gotham Awards will be handed out in New York on November 28, when The Gotham Film & Media Institute will present Adam Sandler with a Performer Tribute.
The competitive categories are a key awards season marker for lower budget films and in some cases reflect solid Oscar prospects. Last year’s winners included The Lost Daughter for best feature, screenplay and Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award for Maggie Gyllenhaal, and lead performence for Olivia Colman, as well as Troy Kotsur for supporting actor for Coda, and Flee for best documentary. Colman and Flee earned Oscar nods and Kotsur won the Academy Award.
Netflix titles Bardo, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, Hustle and White Noise were ineligible as they exceeded the $35m budget limit for nominees. The Wonder, All Quiet On The Western Front, Athena, and The Swimmers were eligible for international feature only.
