Laura Poitras’s Venice Golden Lion winner All The Beauty And The Bloodshed, Alex Pritz’s The Territory and Young Plato from Neasa Ní Chianáin and Declan McGrath are named on the documentary feature shortlist for the 38th IDA Documentary Awards.
The International Documentary Association (IDA) published a list of 25 features and 24 shorts in the run-up to the awards ceremony on December 10 at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles.
Up to 10 nominees in each of the feature and short documentary categories will be selected from the shortlist and announced on November 11. IDA members will get access to view each of the nominees and vote starting on November 18.
Additional IDA Awards will be presented in the following categories: best curated series, best episodic series, best multi-part documentary, best TV feature documentary or mini-series, best short form series, best stand-alone audio documentary, best multi-part audio documentary or series, David L. Wolper Student Documentary Award, best music documentary, best director, best cinematography, best editing, best writing, best music score, ABC News Videosource Award, and the Pare Lorentz Award.
Rick Pérez, IDA’s executive director, said the awards “reflect a growing awareness that multiple perspectives are necessary to better reflect the worldwide popularity of the form and to recognize the global community of artists working in the field”.
IDA received 806 submissions in all categories, 40% of which are internationally produced or co-produced projects from 86 countries. Of the shortlisted feature and short documentaries, eight are distributed by The New Yorker, four by HBO Documentary Films/HBO Max, four by Netflix, three by The New York Times Op-Docs, two by Neon, two by POV/POV Shorts, and two by National Geographic.
