BBC Studios has struck a development, production and distribution partnership with UK producer Sarah Brocklehurst for her new company Brock Media.
The company’s ambitions are to “develop and produce television and films for global audiences, working with leading talent from the UK, as well as world-renowned international filmmakers and artists”.
Brocklehurst was nominated for a Bafta for outstanding debut by a British producer for micro-budget feature Black Pond in 2012. She was named a Screen Star of Tomorrow in 2014 and then scored a hit with Sophie Hyde’s 2019 comedy-drama Animals, which debuted at Sundance and went on to win the Bifa for best debut screenwriter for Emma Jane Unsworth.
Working alongside Brocklehurst at Brock Media are Katie Brown, a former development producer at Big Talk, as head of development; associate producer Rohina Cameron-Perera, who joins from Empress Films; and development executive Melys Codo, who joins from Film4.
Under the terms of the deal, BBC Studios has the option to take an equity stake.
Animals was produced through Brocklehurst’s company Sarah Brocklehurst Productions, which will now be folded into Brock Media. The former company’s properties include two books optioned in October 2019: Forrest Wilson’s Super Gran and Amy Liptrot’s The Outrun.
“Sarah is a bold and fearless creative with a strong track record of creating distinctive stories with honesty, humour and heart,” said Mark Linsey, chief creative officer at BBC Studios.
It is the third deal of its kind in the past year by BBC Studios; it took full ownership of Tessa Ross and Juliette Howell’s House Productions in December last year, having done the same for Murray Ferguson’s Clerkenwell Films in January 2021.
The Studios also has full ownership of Lookout Point as well as majority stakes in Sid Gentle Films and Baby Cow Productions.
