Anglo-French production and financing outfit Anton has increased its investment in Paris-based production and distribution group Newen Studios by 40% to $56m (€50m). TFI-owned Newen has a slate of upcoming projects that include Kevin Macdonald’s new untitled John Galliano documentary, and Belgian series Lost Luggage.
The cash injection will help support Newen’s push into feature films alongside other formats.
Anton first partnered with Newen Studios in 2019 to co-invest in Newen’s distribution rights for the group’s productions and third -party programmes, across all genres.
“The extension of the agreement with Anton testifies to the successful dynamic achieved by Newen Studios,” said Newen Studios’ managing director Romain Bessi.
Bessi will take over as CEO on January 31, succeeding long-time head Bibiane Godfroid. Bessi, who joined the Newen group as managing director in 2018, has been credited with spearheading the recent international expansion of Newen Studios.
Since its acquisition by French broadcasting giant TF1 Group in 2018, Newen Studios has tripled in size and also grown its international footprint with subsidiaries in eight countries including the US and Canada, the UK Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Spain.
Anton has investment deals with a growing network of companies across Europe including Paris-based Federation Entertainment, the UK’s WestEnd Films and Benedict Cumberbatch’s production company SunnyMarch.
