Action film legend Arnold Schwarzenegger is returning to the genre with Breakout, which Expendables 4 filmmaker Scott Waugh will direct this year.
The action-thriller follows Terry, a man whose stepson is framed and sentenced to 25 years in prison in a foreign country. Terry must overcome an overzealous prison warden to jailbreak his stepson and flee the country. Richard D’Ovidio wrote the screenplay, based on a story he co-created with Nicole D’Ovidio.
Breakout is financed and produced by UK company Anton, which is launching world sales at Cannes next month; UTA Independent Film Group is co-representing domestic rights. Production on the film will commence in Eastern Europe later this year. US firm Off The Pier Productions is also producing and financing.
Producers are Sebastien Raybaud and John Zois from Anton; Jeff Elliott and Chad Moore from Off The Pier; Cindy Cowan of Cindy Cowan Entertainment; and Carsten Lorenz and Danny Chan of Almost Never Films. Steve Ponce is executive producer; Off The Pier and Cowan developed and packaged the film.
Breakout will be a first film credit for Schwarzenegger since he reprised his role as T-800 in 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate. He will soon be seen in Netflix series FUBAR, which launches on the platform next month.
