Asa Butterfield and Joel Fry will lead the voice cast of Stitch Head, an animated feature co-production from GFM Animation, Gringo Films, Wild Bunch and Fabrique d’Images.
The film is currently in pre-production and will begin CG animation soon; GFM Animation will launch worldwide sales on the title at this week’s European Film Market (EFM, February 16-22).
Stitch Head is based on the first book in the series of the same name by Guy Bass, first published in 2011. It tells the story of Stitch Head, a small creature awoken to almost-Life by a Mad Professor in a castle, who must protect the professor’s other creations from the townspeople of Grubbers Nubbin. When a travelling show comes to town, the Freakfinder sees Stitch Head as a star who can turn his fortunes around.
Tia Bannon, Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Fern Brady and Jamali Maddix are also on the voice cast.
The film is written and will be directed by British filmmaker Steve Hudson, whose previous directorial credits include Bifa-nominated thriller True North. Toby Genkel, director of Sky’s animated feature The Amazing Maurice, is co-director on Stitch Head.
Hudson’s producing partner Sonja Ewers produces for Germany-based Gringo Films, with Mark Mertens for Luxembourg’s Fabrique d’Images. Development and pre-production has taken place at Fabrique d’Image, Germany’s Lava Labs and US firm Pixomondo.
Marc Gabizon and Michael Luda co-produce for Fabrique d’Images, with Traumhaus Studios and Senator Film as further co-producers; Little Miss Sunshine composer Nick Urata will write the score.
“We are always looking for top tier independent properties that have franchise potential,” said Guy Collins, chairman at GFM Animation, who described the title as a “raucous twist on the Frankenstein story.”
“When we were approached by Wild Bunch, Germany, and Gringo Films we were immediately drawn in by the quality of the storytelling and early visuals and could clearly see the film’s potential. It is exciting to board the film at this point with CG animation starting shortly,” added Collins.
GFM Animation has A Greyhound Of A Girl, based on the book by Roddy Doyle and directed by Enzo d’Alo, as a world premiere in Generation Kplus at this week’s Berlinale.
