Diego Maradona director Asif Kapadia and The Mole Agent filmmaker Maite Alberdi are among the speakers for CPH:Conference, the industry talks programme of CPH:DOX film festival in Copenhagen (March 15-26).
Running from March 20-24, this year’s Conference programme has the theme ‘Future At Our Fingertips’, taking the changed post-pandemic distribution and financing landscape as its launching point. It will centre on questions of inclusivity, freedom and sustainability of documentary as an art form.
UK director Kapadia, who won the Oscar for best documentary in 2016 for Amy, will participate in one of three ‘Mornings With Filmmakers’ sessions, with Free Solo director Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Ascension filmmaker Jessica Kingdon the other two subjects.
Alberdi will take part via the ‘Dialogues On Craft’ strand, where she will discuss protecting vulnerable characters and developing deep intimacy through non-fiction filmmaking. Further participants in the strand include Lucien-Castaing Tayor, Verena Paravel and Jialing Zhang.
The final day of the Conference programme on Friday, March 24 is dedicated to Film:Democracy, a series of sessions gathering filmmakers with leaders from society to brainstorm on how cinema can build and strengthen democracy, freedom and equality.
“We are excited to provide a future-looking platform that brings together diverse, creative voices and visionaries of the documentary filmmaking world with other forward thinkers to exchange ideas, network and create meaningful partnerships. We look forward to stimulating conversations at CPH:Conference!” said Donata von Perfall, director of Documentary Campus, the non-fiction training initiative that curates the CPH:Conference programme with the festival.
“We are proud that CPH:Conference is also a place for tangible work. The DocuMentality initiative will further their research, our partners at the International Media Support are organising a think-tank on fair co-production, whereas the Global Impact Producers Association is gathering to support impact production around the world. It is important for CPH:Conference not only to discuss, but facilitate a real, positive change”, says Tereza Simikova, the head of industry & training of CPH:DOX. DocuMentality is an initiative seeking to normalise the conversation around mental health in the non-fiction film community.
Further CPH:DOX industry events include the CPH:Forum financing and co-production market, and the Inter:Active immersive symposium. The full industry programme runs under the banner of ‘Business As Unusual’.
The festival will open on March 15 with the international premiere of Lin Alluna’s Sundance title Twice Colonized.
