Avatar: The Way Of Water will cross the $500m worldwide mark on Tuesday as Disney sources confirmed the studio’s 2022 releases have suprassed $4bn globally.
By Tuesday morning James Cameron’s return to Pandora stood at $497.1m after Monday’s $55m global box office haul.
The action fantasy sequel to 2009’s Avatar – the highest-grossing film of all time on $2.92bn worldwide – added $38.8m from international markets to reach $346.8m.
A further $16.2m in North America delivered the biggest non-holiday Monday and second biggest Monday of 2022, elevating the running total to $150.3m.
Latest tallies in the key markets see China top of the leaderboard on $62.1m, followed by South Korea on $27.4m, France on $26m, India on $22m, and Germany on $21.3m.
The UK has produced $16.3m, Mexico $15.6m, Australia $12.5m, Italy $11.7m, Brazil $10m, Spain $8.8m, and Thailand $5.8m.
Avatar: The Way Of Water has pushed the combined grosses of The Walt Disney Studios’ 2022 releases to $4.049bn as of Tuesday, which breaks down into $2.3bn from international markets and $1.7bn from North America.
This year’s key releases besides Cameron’s film have been Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness ($955m), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($789m and counting), and Thor: Love And Thunder ($761m).
