‘Bella Ciao’

Bella Ciao, a documentary about the anthem that symbolized the Italian partisans’ fight against facism in the Second World War, is one of 81 new titles added to the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) programme.

Directed by Giulia Giapponesi, Bella Ciao will have its international premiere at IDFA, having first played at Italy’s Bari International Film Festival in March.

Adapted from Italian folk tune ‘Mondine’, the song ‘Bella Ciao’ has experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent weeks, partly as a show of support for Iranian women protesting the death of Mahsa Amini.

Bella Ciao will play in the Frontlight section at IDFA, which includes 23 films, of which 20 are features and 11 are world premieres.

The festival has selected 24 films for its Luminous section, including 17 features and 15 world premieres. Titles include the world premiere of Daniela Lopez’s Loving Martha, in which she explores her grandmother’s fight to end the family’s cycle of abuse, through collected tapes and diaries.

Nine live cinema projects are in the IDFA on Stage programme, including live cinema concert Arcadia Live, performed by members of pop groups Portishead and Goldfrapp. There are 10 titles are in the Paradocs section, showcasing experimental documentary art.

Further additions to the Masters programme include the world premiere of Nishtha Jain’s The Golden Thread.

IDFA 2022 will take place from November 9-20. The Forum programme was announced last week, with the initial Masters lineup and Focus programmes last month; with the Competition selection to be announced before the end of October.
