London’s University of Westminster, the British Film Institute (BFI) and London’s Regent Street Cinema are teaming up to create a master’s programme to launch students into careers in film and television distribution, management and business.

The postgraduate ‘business of film’ course aims to improve the training and talent pool for the financing of film, planning, development and distribution for a global platform.

It will see the BFI provide the students with access to speakers, networking events and placement opportunities. Students will work with the Regent Street cinema to gain experience on film promotion projects.

The first cohort of the business of film MA will start in January 2023.

It comes in the wake of the BFI’s 10-year strategy, Screen Culture 2033, that prioritised the need to develop long-term strategies for education and skills, naming this as one of the institution’s six key ambitions for the coming decade.

The London Film School also offers an MA in international film business, in conjunction with the University of Exeter’s film department and business school.

Harriet Finney, BFI deputy CEO and director of corporate and industry affairs, said: “We’re delighted to be working with the University of Westminster towards a shared goal of future-proofing the film industry. There’s never been a better time to work in film, and an understanding of the relationship between the commercial and the creative will form the bedrock of the skills and knowledge required to forge a successful and meaningful career in UK and international screen industries.”
