The Irishman, Bombshell and Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood lead the way for the 2020 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards nominations, announced on Wednesday (December 11), with four nods apiece, while Parasite became only the second foreign-language film to earn ensemble cast recognition.
Bombshell was a big winner on the day after being somewhat overlooked by awards groups until now. The film’s star Charlize Theron will vie for lead female actor honours with Renée Zellweger for Judy, Scarlett Johansson for Marriage Story, Lupita Nyong’o for Us, and Cynthia Erivo for Harriet.
The female supporting strand will be hotly contested and includes Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie for Bombshell, Johansson for Jojo Rabbit, Laura Dern for Marriage Story, and Jennifer Lopez for Hustlers.
The lead male nominees are frontrunners Joaquin Phoenix for Joker, Adam Driver for Marriage Story, and Leonardo DiCaprio for Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood, alongside Christian Bale for Ford v Ferrari and fellow Briton Taron Egerton for Rocketman.
After missing out on a nod from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association this week, The Irishman star Robert De Niro is left out again in a significant development given that actors comprise a large contingent of Oscar voters. De Niro’s fellow cast members Joe Pesci and Al Pacino both earned supporting actor nods in a strong male category.
Parasite, one of the superstars of the awards season, gets a nod in the ensemble category alongside Bombshell, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, and Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood. This is the first time a nomination in this category has gone to a foreign-language film since Life Is Beautiful in 1998.
The SAG Awards ceremony takes place in Los Angeles on January 19, 2020. Full nominations for film and TV categories appear below:
