The Busan International Film Festival has announced its Asian Project Market (APM) line-up for this year with 30 projects including name directors like Kim Jee-woon, Wayne Wang and Mohsen Makhmalbaf.
A total of 249 projects were submitted this year, with APM organizers noting 35% were international co-productions.
Out of the final 30 selected, 11 are co-productions, including Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s Iran-Georgia project The President, A Brand New Life director Ounie Lecomte’s Korea-Japan project A Thousand Weeds, and Edwin’s Exotic Pictures, an Indonesia-Netherlands-Germany collaboration.
ScreenDaily first reported on Makhmalbaf’s The President - his first English-language feature - last week.
Wayne Wang’s Japan-US project While The Women Are Sleeping, based on a short story from The New Yorker magazine about two vacationing couples at a resort, has been changed to incorporate Asian characters and settings.
Kim Jee-woon, who made his English language directorial debut earlier this year with The Last Stand starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is planning to remake Mamoru Oshii’s sci-fi animation Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade into a live action film.
Other projects include this year’s Sundance-winning Jiseul director O Muel’s The Sea Of Recalls The Soul After Death, Garin Nugroho’s Monkey’s Mask, Naomi Kawase’s Sweet Red Bean Paste, actor/director Yoo Ji-tae’s The Kochebi, and Juvenile Offender director Kang Yi-kwan’s OTS Virus Project, based on a work from novelist Lee Ji-min, who also wrote Modern Boy.
The King Of Pigs director Yeon Sang-ho is returning to APM with a new animation, Seoul Station. Yeon’s The Fake, which was an APM project last year, has been invited to screen at the upcoming Toronto film festival.
Previous APM projects also include current local hit Snowpiercer which has clocked up 8 million admissions at the box office since its July 31 release and was an APM 2009 project for Bong Joon Ho.
APM will take place with the Asian Film Market Oct 7-10 during BIFF (Oct 3-12).
