The Cannes Film Festival has confirmed that Australian director Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis has been selected for its 75th edition, running May 17-28, and will play Out of Competition.

“In addition to Baz Luhrmann and Tom Hanks, the Festival de Cannes is also delighted to welcome Austin Butler and Olivia DeJonge as Elvis and Priscilla Presley,” the festival said in a statement.

It will mark Luhrmann’s fourth time in Cannes Official Selection. His first feature Strictly Ballroom world premiered in Un Certain Regard in 1992, while he presented two films in the opening film slot, Moulin Rouge! in 2001 and The Great Gatsby in 2013.

The film explores the life and music of Elvis Presley through the prism of his complicated 20-year relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker, played by Hanks.

It spans Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. Central to that journey is one of the most significant and influential people in Elvis’s life, Priscilla Presley.

The film is produced by Bazmark and The Jackal Group. It will be released in US  on June 24, 2022 and in the rest of the world from June 22, 2022.

”The Festival de Cannes wishes to thank the whole team at Warner Bros. Pictures for their loyalty that will release the film worldwide,” said the festival.

Tom Cruise tentpole Top Gun: Maverick has also been confirmed for this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The full festival line-up will be unveiled on April 14.
