Roman Polanski wins best director; Blue Is the Warmest Colour’s Adèle Exarchopoulos wins best female newcomer.

Guillaume Gallienne’s semi autobiographical comedy Me, Myself and Mum (Les Garcons et Guillaume, à table) won in five categories in the French Césars on Friday evening, including best film.
Actor-director Gallienne’s directorial debut, revolving around his relationship with his mother and her assumption he was gay as a child, also won best first film, best adaptation and best editing. Gallienne also won best actor.
Gallienne, is currently hitting international screens in Jalil Lespert’s Yves Saint Laurent in the role of the fashion designer’s partner Pierre Bergé. He will be in London next week alongside Pierre Niney, who plays Yves Saint Laurent, and Lespert for a special screening at the Institut Francais.
Roman Polanski won best director for his psychosexual comedy Venus in Fur.
In other awards, Sandrine Kiberlain won best actress for her performance in Albert Dupontel’s 9-Month Stretch as a workaholic judge who falls pregnant with a criminal’s child but cannot remember having sex.
The slapstick comedy, which clocked up some 1.9 million admissions at the French box office last year, also won best screenplay for Dupontel.
Adèle: Chapters 1 & 2 (aka Blue is the Warmest Colour), which was nominated in eight categories, picked up just one award: co-star Adèle Exarchopoulos won best female newcomer.
Pierre Deladonchamps clinched best male newcomer for his performance in Alain Guiraudie’s Stranger by the Lake.
Belgian director Felix Van Groeningen’s The Broken Circle Breakdown beat Gravity, La Grande Bellezza and Blue Jasmine in the best foreign film category.
Other highlights of Friday’s ceremony included an honorary career César for actress Scarlett Johnansson, which was presented by Quentin Tarantino.
