Pawel Pawlikowski’s historical romance Cold War will open the 24th Sarajevo Film Festival on August 10.
The film will screen simultaneously at the Raiffeisen Open Air Cinema and National Theater Sarajevo, with Pawlikowski participating in a discussion the following day in the festival’s ‘Coffee with…’ programme.
Pawlikowksi previously screened Ida at Sarajevo in 2014, which went on to win the Oscar for best foreign language film in 2015.
Set in the wake of the Second World War and the closing of the Iron Curtain, Cold War follows lovers Wiktor (Tomasz Kot) and Zula (Joanna Kulig) through Poland, Germany, Yugoslavia and France as their passionate love is tested by the tensions of the time. Screen’s review called it ‘glorious, sophisticated film-making’.
The film had its world premiere in Competition at Cannes, where Pawlikowksi picked up the best director award. The film scored 2.9 on Screen’s jury grid.
The 2018 Sarajevo Film Festival will run from August 10 to 17. Asghar Farhadi, who opened Cannes with his latest film Everybody Knows, will preside over the feature Competition jury.
