Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M Chu has made his first overall television deal, signing a four-year arrangement with Disney’s 20th Century Fox Television (TCFTV).
The deal calls for Chu to develop and serve as executive producer on TV projects, some of which he will also direct, and allows him to direct existing TCFTV projects.
Before signing the deal Chu – who has previously worked on TV projects including Good Trouble, for Disney’s Freeform cable channel – was already attached to direct Home Before Dark, a mystery series from Paramount and Anonymous Content for Apple TV+.
In features, Chu is set to direct Warner Bros’ film version of musical In The Heights and a film about the Thai cave rescue for Netflix.
Since Disney’s acquisition of most of the Fox assets, TCFTV has announced TV deals with talents including Octavia Spencer, Jake Kasdan, Marlene King and Dan Fogelman.
Chu commented: “Throughout my film career I have been lucky enough to play in many genres from dance and music to action, romantic-comedy, documentary drama and beyond. So it was crucial for me, as a storyteller, to find a partner in the television space that had the same vast interests and willingness to break the mold with new perspectives and stories that represent the diverse world we live in. Dana Walden and her team at 20th Century Fox TV was the undisputed choice to join forces with.”
TCFTV president of creative affairs Jonnie Davis added: “Jon directed one of the biggest, most entertaining and uplifting hits of the year in Crazy Rich Asians, starring our own Constance Wu, and getting him to this studio became nothing short of a mission to Terence [Carter, TCFTV executive vice-president development, comedy and drama] and our development teams. He has spectacular taste and talent loves him. We’re excited he’s making this studio his creative home.”
