“Caesars Palace seems an appropriate place to launch our attack on the world with Crimes Of The Future,” David Cronenberg told CinemaCon prior to teeing up the first-look trailer to his Cannes Competition selection during Tuesday’s (April 26) CinemaCon presentation.
Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart, and Viggo Mortensen star in the Canadian auteur’s latest feature and the trailer confirmed his return to the body horror aesthetic that established his reputation for avant-garde, provocative work. The trailer will not be available beyond CinemaCon until next week.
Cronenberg said he first wrote the screenplay more than 20 years ago and was convinced to dig it up by longtime collaborator Robert Lantos, who was also in attendance at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace and said it was more relevant than ever.
“I was very lucky to end up shooting the film in Athens,” Cronenberg said. “I had written it for Toronto of 20 years ago and it was very exciting to have the production in an ancient city.” Crimes Of The Future opens on June 3 in the US. It not a remake of the director’s 1970 film of the same name and takes place in a near future where humans have evolved beyond their natural state.
Neon also brought Brett Morgen to enthuse about his upcoming Cannes selection and David Bowie “experience” Moonage Daydream which has been made with the cooperation of Bowie’s estate and features rare concert and performance footage. Attendees got to see live footage of Bowie performing Heroes and a startling assembly of imagery accompanying his song Hallo Spaceboy. Neon used the session to announce it will open in the US in September.
“Throughout this career Bowie defined labels,” said Morgen. ‘It’s hard to define Bowie… Bowie cannot be defined, he can be experienced. And that is why we’ve crafted Moonage Daydream to be a unique cinematic experience.”
The Neon presentation was hosted by president of distribution Elissa Federoff, SVP of distribution Sumyi Antonson, VP of exhibitor relations Kim Kalyka and founder and CEO Tom Quinn.
The distributor also showed a clip from its Sundance award-winner Fire Of Love, on which it partners with National Geographic Documentary Films.
