German documentary sales outfit Deckert Distribution has picked up world rights to Close To Vermeer directed by Suzanne Raes, and has already closed a first deal on the film with US distributor Kino Lorber.
The feature documentary follows the curation of the biggest ever exhibition devoted exclusively to the Dutch master painter. Taking place in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum and to run until June this year, the event has sold out all first tickets in record time.
The deal with Kino Lorber was negotiated by doc consultant Jan Rofekamp and Deckert Distribution’s Liselot Verbrugge.
Verbrugge commented that distributors’ attention has been grabbed by the launch of the exhibition last week and the extensive media coverage. “Vermeer, painter of iconic works such as Girl With The Pearl Earring has fans all over the world, and beautifully made films on art like this always find their way to the audience.”
The film was produced by Dutch producer Ilja Roomans for Docmakers. Both companies are also collaborating on Sundance title 5 Seasons Of Revolution, for which Docmakers act as co-producer.
Other Deckert Distribution titles in Berlin include Sarvnik Kaur’s Against the Tide (special jury award for Verité Filmmaking at Sundance 2023) and Eastern Front by Vitaly Mansky and Yevhen Titarenko, world-premiering in Berlinale Encounters.
Dutch distributor Cinema Delicatessen will release Close to Vermeer in Dutch cinemas in March.
