No female directors have earned a nomination in the US Directors Guild Of America’s (DGA) top category announced on Wednesday, although women including Charlotte Wells and Audrey Diwan dominate the debut director race.
Golden Globe winner Steven Spielberg is nominated in the Outstanding Directorial Achievement In Theatrical Feature Film for 2022 TIFF selection The Fabelmans alongside Todd Field for 2022 Venice entry TÁR, Joseph Kosinski for Top Gun Maverick, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Sheinert for 2022 SXSW entry Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Martin McDonagh for 2022 Venice selection The Banshees Of Inisherin.
Missing from the list are Sarah Polley with Women Talking, a prestige Telluride premiere featuring an A-list ensemble, and Gina Prince-Bythewood, whose The Woman King starring Oscar winner Viola Davis premiered at TIFF and has also earned acclaim.
James Cameron for Avatar: The Way Of Water and Baz Luhrmann for Elvis – both of whom were nominated at last night’s Golden Globes – also did not make the cut.
Wells earned a nod for Aftersun in the Outstanding Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director and joins Diwan for her 2021 Venice Golden Lion winner Happening, Alice Diop for 2022 Venice selection Saint Omer, Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic for 2021 Cannes Directors Fortnight entry Murina, and John Patton Ford for his 2022 Sundance selection Emily The Criminal.
The 75th Annual DGA Awards will take place on February 18 at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
