Walt Disney Studios has claimed the biggest domestic, international and global box office totals for 2022, making it the top-grossing studio globally for a seventh consecutive year.
Disney reported 2022 grosses of $2bn for North America and $2.9bn for international markets, giving the studio a global tally of $4.9bn.
The multi-label distributor said that with Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder it released four of the year’s top eight films domestically, claiming an estimated 27% market share.
The same titles, though with Wakanda Forever and Multiverse of Madness swapping positions, gave Disney four of the year’s top eight films globally.
Disney reported that The Way of Water, from 20th Century Studios and still playing strongly, ended calendar 2022 with an estimated $1.3bn globally, comprised of $401m from domestic and $902m from international.
Wakanda Forever, from Marvel Studios and also still in release, reached year’s end with an estimated $817m globally, made up of $436m domestic and $381m international.
Multiverse of Madness, another Marvel Studios title, came in with $956m globally, $411m from domestic and $544m from international.
Thor: Love and Thunder, the studio’s third big Marvel release, hit $761m globally, with $343m domestic and $418m international.
Releases from other labels adding significantly to the 2022 Disney tally included Pixar Animation Studios’ Lightyear, 20th Century’s Death on the Nile and Searchlight Pictures’ The Menu.
As of late Tuesday (January 3) the only other US studio to have reported 2022 box office totals was Sony, with $870.7m from all its labels (including Sony Pictures Classics) domestically and $1.25bn internationally, for a global tally of $2.12bn.
