Don’t Worry Darling director Olivia Wilde has addressed what she described as a “vicious” incident at CinemaCon when she was served custody papers by former partner Jason Sudeikis.

The filmmaker-actor, whose second directorial outing is about to get its world premiere at Venice Film Festival, was presenting the film’s trailer at CinemaCon in Las Vegas last spring when a mysterious person dropped an envelope on stage. Wilde briefly scanned the contents and continued with her presentation.

“It was my workplace,” Wilde told Variety. “In any other workplace, it would be seen as an attack. It was really upsetting. It shouldn’t have been able to happen. There was a huge breach in security, which is really scary. The hurdles that you had to jump through to get into that room with several badges, plus special COVID tests that had to be taken days in advance, which gave you wristbands that were necessary to gain access to the event — this was something that required forethought.”

Wilde continued, “I hated that this nastiness distracted from the work of so many different people and the studio that I was up there representing. To try to sabotage that was really vicious. But I had a job to do; I’m not easily distracted… But, you know, sadly, it was not something that was entirely surprising to me. I mean, there’s a reason I left that relationship.”

Wilde and Sudeikis were together from 2011 to 2020 and have two children. Sudeikis, who stars in Apple TV+ hit comedy Ted Lasso, said at the time he had not known when or how the papers would be served.

Wilde subsequently asked a judge to dismiss Sudeikis’s petition to keep the children with him in New York, which has been granted. She divides her time between Los Angeles and the UK.

In another part of the interview, the filmmaker declined to comment directly on her reported involvement on a secretive Marvel Studios project, adding: “But that would be cool.”

New Line’s sci-fi drama Don’t Worry Darling stars Florence Pugh, Chris Pine, and Harry Styles will open in the US and UK on September 23.
