Hong Kong-based Edko Films has picked up worldwide rights to Eric Tsang Hing-weng’s Hong Kong Family, which is set to world premiere at Busan International Film Festival.
Starring Edan Lui and Anson Lo, from hit Hong Kong boyband Mirror, along with veteran actors Teresa Mo and Tse Kwan Ho, the family drama is based on Tsang’s own family experience. Marking his feature directorial debut, it follows a family that was torn apart after their last winter solstice dinner turned sour. Eight years later, a cousin has returned from overseas and hopes to bring everyone back together.
The sales deal excludes China and Taiwan, where rights are handled by producer Patricia Cheng of Tales Of Honey. The film received funding from the Hong Kong Film Development Fund’s First Feature Film Initiative (FFFI).
After Busan, where it is set to premiere in A Window On Asian Cinema section on October 7, it is set to open the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival on October 25.
Meanwhile, ensemble comedy Table For Six, which Edko Films produced and distributed, has become Hong Kong’s second highest grossing local film of 2022 to date.
It is expected to reach $7.64m (HK$60m) by this weekend, closely behind Warriors Of Future, which has just become the highest grossing Chinese-language film in Hong Kong of all time, taking $8.46m (HK$66.44m) as of October 4.
Edko has sold Table for Six to Sky Films (Taiwan), Clover Films (Southeast Asia) and Haven Productions (UK) and is in talks with overseas buyers for North America, Australia and New Zealand.
